Nance County was, for many years, known as the "Pawnee Reserve," since it was their "choice hunting grounds". This Pawnee Village was located at Loup Forks in 1870. Earthen mound-dwellings provided substantial homes in both summer and winter. The long poles piled at each side of the entrance were for wigwams used when on extended hunts or when travelling.
