Lasionycteris noctivagans, silver-haired bat

These bats forage at a more leisurely pace than other bats in the region. They tend to begin foraging for food at dusk taking long breaks in the feeding ritual. They glide down across standing water in predominately grassy areas. There they dine on insects typical to the wetland habitat but not exclusive to it. They are opportunistic feeders. If the evening feeding location has drawn them to a wet clearing in a forested area, the selection of insects for that evening's meal would differ but would still be adequate. Competition for available food may dictate diet periodically or regionally. They require craggy out-crops of rock, loose bark on trees, darkened man-made structures, or caves for their roosting spots. This species is migratory and tends to be in south-central Nebraska during April through September.
