Canis latrans, coyote
Coyotes are extremely adaptable, opportunistic animals. Their distribution is expansive across the continental United States, spanning a wide variety of habitats. Dens are located in open grasslands as well as in dense woodlands. They will feed on what ever is most abundant and easily obtained. There are noted preferences for small rodents, rabbits, amphibians, crayfish, carrion, and fruit. Livestock is occasionally taken but generally only the weak or injured; and only when other more easily captured prey are in short supply. In south-central Nebraska during the spring migration of waterfowl, weak Sandhills cranes are a seasonal delicacy.
